Life QotW: What's Your Major?

Your Indonesian is very good, Emu..Not sure how you speak Indonesian, though..maybe better than me speak in English. My English speaking is terrible. When I spoke to my English teacher during my student years sometimes I mixed with Japanese..haha!
I really want to improve my English speaking and hearing..
I think my reading and writing maybe better than my speaking and listening too. Funny about you mixing your Japanese and English. Whenever I have tried to learn another language, I always found myself using Indonesian words for things.
[this is good]
Non-English speakers do speak English good because we/they have been taught English since very young age. Anyway, I am really impressed that you do speak Indonesian very well! I think you love Indonesian cultures more than I do :D
Thanks Connie. Actually one thing I don't like about Indonesian culture is the discrimination against Chinese Indonesians. I can see how this would make you feel ambivalent about Indonesian culture.
It's all Suharto's fault. The way he brainwashed his people...
Yeah, my English degree is almost worthless.
I wouldn't say worthless. I think it helps in learning to write well (really important in my job) and also in being able to critically analyse things (even situations). Wouldn't you agree? I still love reading too and thinking studying English has made me a more active reader so I feel able to tackle more challenging books and get more out of them than if I was reading in a more passive way. I
Yeah, I guess I haven't found the job where my writing and analytical skills are actually put to use. I find that I read books but usually have no one to discuss them with. I have been paid for some writing work, but nothing substantial.
I have a Masters in German language and literature....which is ONLY useful for ear wigging German/Austrian tourists....
I think degree is just a paper qualification that show you have obtained a certain degree of intelectual. I obtained my first degree in social science majoring population studies and was offered a job in banking institution. Till todate, I am stuck in the banking industry. To make me competitive, I took MBA (Fin) from Uni of Hull. I was made a branch manager before I obtained my MBA. So, what we learned during varsity does not necessarily applicable to our working needs.

I made the same 'mistake' of doing a degree in what I was ineterested in without much thought about how useful it will be down the line. If I could go back I would still study what I was interested in but more in line with something that would get me into a better job. Still, I can think of worse jobs than teaching (despite the low pay).

It's interesting how many people (perhaps even most) end up doing jobs not related to their field of study.

Hope you get more opportunities in future, Budd, The ability to write well is a very useful life skill in any case.
Also for travelling though. Have you spent much time in Germany/German speaking countries?

True, AJ, although I do think the skills you learn in doing a degree can be transferrable to a whole range of different subject areas. I imagine you did a lot of statistics as part of your population studies which could be useful for the financial sector. Also makes you a more well-rounded banker. How dull would life be if we all studied things like finance for our degrees and then spent our whole working life diong the same thing. I also went back and did an MBA later on and found it good because my experience of working actually made it seem more relevant and interesting.

'Mistakes' like that aren't permanent though, Roemer. It is always possible to go back and do post grad in something different/more vocational. I think you get more out of these kind of degrees when you actually do have a bit of work and life experience to bring to the classroom with you.
