Just Listen to Me is a very new neighbour of mine. I am quoting from her post entitled 'Rescuing animals makes my heart burst with happiness' because I think it is great what she is doing and also because I want to help promote the idea of adopting rescue animals rather than buying a pet from a breeder or pet shop:

I volunteered to help transport this sweet Chow this last weekend (this was the 2nd Chow transport I've done). She was a street dog in Houston and under her fur, she is skin and bones. She's waiting for another transport going to Lubbock where there is a Chow Sanctuary. In the meantime, I have decided to foster her and let her stay in my backyard. She is doing much better and seems to have a little more energy (she's on meds right now to fight a UTI and also worms, which I treated already for her). She is a doll! And so mild-mannered and docile, very loving and gentle. She sure wasn't feeling all that well when I first got her, but now she has more energy and she seems waaaaay happier.

I'm a little worried that I'll end up getting too attached to her to let her go!!! Then I'll have to keep her!! Aaah.

Would this be too ridiculous?

We have an old dog called Mollie. For many years, walking Mollie (and previously, her good friend and companion, Max) provided our main impetus for getting out and exploring the neighbourhood and getting some exercise into the bargain. Now Mollie is coming up for her 15th birthday and finding it hard walking much further than the end of the street and back due to arthritis in her back legs. What this has meant is that we have had to drive to the local park if we want Mollie to come along or else we have to leave her behind. We have my son's old Maclaren stroller at home and it occurred to me last night that maybe we could use this to take Mollie down to the park by foot. Would mean we would still be getting the exercise and Mollie could get out and walk around once we were there. I'm sure my husband will think this is totally insane!

Dogs rightful place

This is Mollie after one of her visits to the vet for her arthritis shots. Unfortunately they don't seem to be helping as much as they used to and she is still staggering around like an old lady especially on cold mornings.

Dogs rightful place

Mollie always goes straight for the driver's seat whenever she gets into the car. I wonder if it is to stop us driving anywhere as she actually gets car sick. this was coming home from the vet the other week (she has been having weekly shots for her arthritis). I like how the picture looks black and white even though it isn't.

Panda_Hello

Actually this is my son's dream pet. I had to explain to him why we couldn't keep a panda at home. He would also quite like a dinosaur.

My dream pet, on the other hand, would be a dog that cleaned up after itself - obviating the need for this:

And no we do not subject our dog Mollie to this level of doggy indignity!

In Dog We Trust

The title of this entry pinched from a podcast/radio broadcast from the very funny and informative (but sometimes downright scary) This American Life

I had occasion to take the kids to a 'dog park' in Sydney's Leichhardt yesterday. We stopped for a drink at this cafe: Cafe Bones

The cafe seems to be somewhat of an inner west institution for those who like to take their beloved pooches out for a 'puppacino' or similar.

The aroma was a little bit pungent and rather too noisy to have much of a conversation.

The four-legged cafe set seemed to be enjoying themselves though and the kids took it all in their stride - and thought it all completely normal!
