This is the movie I went and saw with a friend last night - a bit predictable (and a totally unrealistic birth scene) but lots of laughs and familiar faces in the cast. Exactly what I was in the mood for. Quite a lot of people had kids (tween and teenage girls) at the session we were at and it was probably something my 9yo daughter would have enjoyed too. Was cleaner than a lot of the sitcoms on tv at the moment (eg, Two and Half Men which we have to watch with finger permanently poised on remote control):
What are you looking forward to this week?
Well, not sure if "looking forward to" is the right choice of words but I am wait listed for a training course this week which is all about techniques for conducting cost benefit analyses of business proposals. I have also promised to take my son to see Star Wars: the Clone Wars next weekend but hoping I can also manage to sneak out at some stage to see this with some girlfriends:
Finally got to see this film on the weekend. My husband has been dying to see it for a while as he is really interested in Genghis Khan. The movie is actually the first in a planned trilogy but given that it took 10 years to make, we probably won't see the second and third instalments any time soon. While it did contain quite a few gory battlescenes, it was actually a really beautiful film. The cinematography was magnificent (really worth viewing on the big screen) and the story of Temudjin's relationship with his wife, Boorte, and his 'blood brother', Jamukha, really moving and interesting. Fantastic acting as well. Looking forward to seeing the second film although expect that this will be when things really get nasty!
Check out this short film by director Alison McLean from 1989. I first saw this at the cinema before a feature film I can't even recall now. I was so impressed at the time.
Melanie Lynskey who plays Rose is actually a New Zealander and started her acting career with one of the main roles (alongside Kate Winslet) in the wonderfully chilling New Zealand film Heavenly Creatures.
What is also amazing is that she manages to disguise her New Zealand accent so well. I travelled overseas with a girl from New Plymouth (where Lynskey also from) and she had the strongest Kiwi accent I have ever heard. Her boyfriend (who was from somewhere on New Zealand's North Island) said he practically had to act as an interpreter for her when they were travelling in countries where people spoke English as a second language as noone could understand anything she said. I'm sure there are some Australians who have similar "accent trouble" overseas.
Back to Heavenly Creatures, I highly recommend watching it if you have never seen it. There really is a lot more to New Zealand cinema than Lord of the Rings.
Going to see this tonight! I have been wanting to see it for a while but couldn't persuade my husband. Now going with a friend instead.
Look at the first post you ever wrote on Vox. What important developments or changes have occurred in your life since then?

This was actually my second post as my first just a book review. My second post was on the movie She's the Man and my efforts to get my daughter interested in the plays of Shakespeare. Shortly after posting this, I managed to find an outdoor community performance of Much Ado About Nothing which we went to with two other mums and 9yo's. My daughter and her friend (the other boy fell asleep) found the performance hilarious despite not being able to understand a lot of the dialogue. They were pretty disgusted at the kissing at the end though!
Still keeping my eyes peeled for other Shakespeare plays to take her too. I think she would probably enjoy Midsummer Night's Dream or Twelfth Night or even Romeo and Juliet (but just cover her eyes during any disgusting kissing!).
