The Read Carpet Podcast - Episode 1 - Vox

This podcast, The Read Carpet, is all about Young Adult books and resources!  This is our very first episode and we will be releasing a new episode every two weeks (the 1st and the 16th of each month, hopefully).  Please excuse some of the audio on this one...we had some trouble with some of the microphones.  ;)

This is not a very good photograph (in fact it is quite atrocious) but I wanted to get a photo of myself at the exact time I was listening to a my Vox neighbour, Renee (aka Elentari), doing her segment on The Read Carpet podcast (which just happened to be when I was on a busy peak hour train).  I really enjoyed the whole podcast (apart from the bits I couldn't really hear because of the sound quality) and was impressed with what a smart and articulate young woman Renee is.  There were some other great segments on the podcast which I would highly recommend to anyone interested in Young Adult literature.  You can even download it free from iTunes (which is what I did).

Actually it was lucky I took these photos on Wednesday as I ended up being home from work sick yesterday (had a migraine from not sleeping for several nights because it was so hot).  It is now Friday and I am off to the hairdresser soon to get my hair tidied up.  The weather has also cooled down since then so I am no longer wearing my sandals to the office.

As the Qotd and Vox hunts have been so US- and Bestbuy-centric lately, I have decided to set my own challenge which is to try and get a self portrait of myself with a plate of nasi goreng (fried rice).  Wish me luck!  Anyone else care to set themselves a similar challenge?

Not sure if I have mentioned previously but I live in a pretty Muslim neighbourhood in Sydney.  That is not the reason I am wearing my scarf on my head in this photo.  I had actually forgotten my umbrella and was trying to prevent my hair from getting wet and frizzy in the rain.  I was making the same 'fashion statement' dropping my kids at school one rainy morning and got a big grin from one of the Muslim mums who must have thought I looked pretty funny (or silly).

Actually looking at the photo of myself makes me pretty glad not to be Muslim as I really don't have the face to carry the hijab off.  

Our local chemist looks gorgeous in hers.  She has a very round, cherubic face and the blue scarf she wears frames it beautifully.  Another friend who started wearing a scarf in her 30's has the wildest mop of curly hair you have ever seen and pretty funky at home clothes.  I have been at her house when she has been getting ready to go out and it has been amazing to see the tranformation from wild and crazy-looking at home F to neat and demure-looking going out F. 

The other confronting thing would be to have to forgo wearing make up.  I don't wear a lot but would feel very self-conscious going out without even my eyeliner on.  F was telling me about another woman she knew who had started wearing a scarf in her 30's only after having her eyeliner tattooed on.  That would be me, I think!

Now I know why the batteries on my phone are always flat!
