Actually, my biggest noise gripe at the moment (apart from the hordes of squawking cockatoos outside my house) is whistle-happy Cityrail employees. Getting on the train at Town Hall station (probably the busiest city station) always takes a few minutes because first all the passengers already on the train need to get off and then there are usually at least a dozen people waiting to get on. Unless the entering passengers trample all over those trying to get off (which they sometimes do!), it is pretty impossible to get everyone off and on in less than a minute. This doesn't, however, stop the Cityrail employees blasting everyone with their whistles as they try to get onto the train. I was actually taken aback one day last week but a bloke in a Cityrail uniform who was standing calmly by and not blowing on his whistle. Then I heard the guard who is usually on this platform (Platform 3 in case anyone from Cityrail is reading this!) ask him "Don't you like to use the whistle? I always find it very effective". I said to her "Yes, very effective for deafening people" (but I am not sure that she heard me as she has probably deafened herself). Since then I have been trying to stand well away from where she normally stands as she is obviously pathologically whistle-happy. I think she has been trying to spread the joy around though as she too has been moving to different parts of the platform. Someone is going to push her off one day, I am sure.
The first photo is of some cockatoos hanging about in the street near my house in suburban Sydney. It is not a very good photo but I promised Karen I would have a go at snapping some of them. I will keep trying to get some better shots over the weekend.
On a more serious note, this second 'birds in the 'burbs' photo was taken by a woman in outer suburban Melbourne, not far from where some of the Victorian bushfires are still raging. She said that the trees in her street are full of native birds at the moment. At any other time, this would be nice but in this case, it is most likely because their birds habitat is being destroyed by fire.
If anyone would like to help those helping the bird and animal victims of the Victorian bushfires, please visit Wildlife Victoria's website for information on how to make a donation.
This one wasn't as bad as the two people other day at least this train was almost empty. I actually felt like I could have done the same this morning after spending most of the weekend packing and sorting for the move. Maybe I will curl up under my desk for a snooze later today and hope noone notices.
My husband says I should be careful taking photos like this but I figure that noone is going to sit up and get annoyed at me as then they would have to admit that they weren't really sleeping, just seat hogging. This was on the 9:30am train to the city this morning. They were both sleeping and taking up more than one seat. Actually the guy at the rear had been taking up more space than it appears in this photo - he had kind of shifted a bit as we approached the first city station - which made me suspect that he really wasn't sleeping all that deeply if he knew where he was. Meanwhile the rest of the carriage was crowded with commuters and lots of people were having to stand up. I felt like nudging them and asking them if they wanted a cup of tea and some toast!
I had a great time shopping in Chinatown on Saturday while the kids were at Kung Fu. I picked up some cheap Esprit t-shirts for my brothers in law at a factory outlet and also bought heaps of beautiful cherries and lychees and some prawns and fish at Paddy's market.
This other picture of the 'snak truck' (or should it be snak truk) was taken near my office on a different (greyer) day.
