Actually, my biggest noise gripe at the moment (apart from the hordes of squawking cockatoos outside my house) is whistle-happy Cityrail employees. Getting on the train at Town Hall station (probably the busiest city station) always takes a few minutes because first all the passengers already on the train need to get off and then there are usually at least a dozen people waiting to get on. Unless the entering passengers trample all over those trying to get off (which they sometimes do!), it is pretty impossible to get everyone off and on in less than a minute. This doesn't, however, stop the Cityrail employees blasting everyone with their whistles as they try to get onto the train. I was actually taken aback one day last week but a bloke in a Cityrail uniform who was standing calmly by and not blowing on his whistle. Then I heard the guard who is usually on this platform (Platform 3 in case anyone from Cityrail is reading this!) ask him "Don't you like to use the whistle? I always find it very effective". I said to her "Yes, very effective for deafening people" (but I am not sure that she heard me as she has probably deafened herself). Since then I have been trying to stand well away from where she normally stands as she is obviously pathologically whistle-happy. I think she has been trying to spread the joy around though as she too has been moving to different parts of the platform. Someone is going to push her off one day, I am sure.
This one wasn't as bad as the two people other day at least this train was almost empty. I actually felt like I could have done the same this morning after spending most of the weekend packing and sorting for the move. Maybe I will curl up under my desk for a snooze later today and hope noone notices.
My husband says I should be careful taking photos like this but I figure that noone is going to sit up and get annoyed at me as then they would have to admit that they weren't really sleeping, just seat hogging. This was on the 9:30am train to the city this morning. They were both sleeping and taking up more than one seat. Actually the guy at the rear had been taking up more space than it appears in this photo - he had kind of shifted a bit as we approached the first city station - which made me suspect that he really wasn't sleeping all that deeply if he knew where he was. Meanwhile the rest of the carriage was crowded with commuters and lots of people were having to stand up. I felt like nudging them and asking them if they wanted a cup of tea and some toast!
So here is an old one from - guess where - the train station!
Looking at this also makes me realise that I am due for a haircut as my hair has grown quite a lot since this picture was taken. I am thinking of going even shorter this time as it will be much easier for summer. Still debating whether I am vain enough to pack my hair straightener when we go away to the island for two weeks at Christmas. I'm sure noone else there bothers with this kind of thing and will be a major pain if I am swimming and getting my hair wet every day.
The idea of photographing my feet for this week's self portrait partly inspired by my neighbour Sarah's portrait of her feet from last week. Also finding it hard to take interesting photos on Thursday mornings when I always follow the same route to work. As you can see from the second picture, the gap between train platform and train door is quite pronounced. It is the same on most Sydney train stations.
I nearly lost my son down this gap once (at Circular Quay station) but fortunately I was holding onto his hand pretty tightly and managed to catch him in time and hoik him up again.
Have heard of other people not being so fortunate though.
I seem to have deleted the one with my sleeping neighbour in the background. This is another one I took though. Note complete nonchalance from fellow passenger (s). That is the beauty of a camera phone, ie, other passengers probably didn't even realise I was taking photos (or else they are just jaded from too much commuting with all sorts of crazy people). Honestly, if people aren't directly annoying me on the train (eg, falling asleep on my shoulder, taking up a seat with their bag, laptop or bible when I don't have somewhere to sit, trying to engage me in a drunken conversation etc), I really don't care what they do!
